  • Philip H. Scharper, Jr., M.D., J.D. is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in medical retina and vitreoretinal surgery. He joined Lancaster Retina Specialists in 2021. Dr. Scharper earned his undergraduate degree from Loyola University of Maryland with a Bachelors of Business Administration and a concentration in Marketing. He completed his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1999. He spent his internship year at the University of Hawaii and completed his ophthalmology residency at Georgetown/Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Scharper then went on to complete his vitreoretinal fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with Drs. Morris and Witherspoon in 2005. He has extensive training and experience in all areas of medical and surgical vitreoretinal disease. Dr. Scharper has presented several research projects at national meetings, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. In 2015, he gave a presentation at the European Vitreoretinal Society on a new treatment for central serous chorioretinopathy. In 2020, he and his co-authors presented research on Persistent Anterior Uveitis. He has also given numerous lectures on Retinopathy of Prematurity. After completion of his fellowship, Dr. Scharper worked in an academic practice for several years where he trained ophthalmology residents and began a vitreoretinal fellowship program. He also completed his Juris Doctorate degree with a concentration in Health Care law at the University of Maryland School of Law and is a licensed attorney.
